Emergency Position-Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRB) are compact battery-powered radio transmitters. When activated they send a distress signal via satellite to identify the position of the user and alert the emergency services. Some models come with integral GPS transmitters for even greater positioning accuracy. Category I EPIRBs are float-free and are automatically activated by immersion in water. Category II EPIRBs are manually activated, although some may include an automatic option.
